Is your Owners Corporation practicing sustainability?

Posted on 17 March 2022

Never before has the concept of sustainability been more omnipresent in the public conscience as it is in 2022.

As more and more people become increasingly concerned about the impact of climate on the planet, many are looking for ways to live a more sustainable life and reduce their ecological footprint on earth.

As a lot owner or a tenant in an apartment complex, where you are just one voice of many, it can be easy to feel powerless or feel like there is nothing you can do about the energy consumption of your building outside of your single lot. However, strata management company, Melcorp Strata, is here to tell you that is not the case!

There are a number of ways your building can be more sustainable – and there are many advantages to be gained for an Owners Corporation that takes a more sustainable approach.

Did you know?

  • Common rooms and shared services account for up to 60% of energy usage in big structures such as flats
  • Utility bills account for around 25% of administrative fund levies
  • According to the 2016 Census, apartments are home to 15% of Australian households. This figure has only grown since
  • At the moment of a sale or lease, 80 percent of residents seek information regarding a building’s environmental performance

Here are five things you can suggest to your Owners Corporation to change within your building to ensure a more environmentally sustainable performance:

Solar Panels

If your building roof has space for solar panels, investing in solar energy to power your building is a fantastic way to save on energy costs and ensure a greener approach.

Water

Most new buildings will have water tanks built in as a standard feature. But if your building is older consider retrofitting water tanks to catch stormwater. This could be used for applications such as gardening or washing common driveways.

Lighting

Installing LEDs or CFLs in common areas can drastically reduce overall energy consumption. Adding in motion sensors or timers that limit the amount of time the lights are on will also aid in reducing energy.
